Update: It appears that Kagis doesn’t like this article- his response has been to ask someone to commit a crime (which is a crime in itself). Classy- can you believe that Sandy Garossino associates with these people? (Remember that next time she’s on the ballot Vancouver…)

British Columbia’s having a provincial election on May 14th. And, like all elections, there’s no shortage of clowns in the competition. While most candidates don’t actually admit they’re clowns- in the case of the Work Less Party there seems to be an exception this year. Mathew Kagis, their candidate for Vancouver-West flies his clown flag with great pride.

The BC Work Less Party was founded in 2003 as a spin-off the World Naked Bike Ride. They’re mostly a single-issue party, pushing for BC to reduce the work week from 40 to 32 hours- they wish to legislate that people must work less so that we have less money to spend on consumer goods. The party has also been used to promote the causes of some Activistocrat environmentalists including Betty Krawczyk and pipeline protester Ben West.

Considering their history of never having a candidate win a seat, it’s hard perceive take Work Less as a serious party- in fact, the Silly Party tends to attract a higher percentage of the electorate. Kagis’ nomination for Vancouver-West End probably won’t help with this problem- but, he’ll most certainly contribute to his new the party’s silliness quotient.

Kagis has a long history as an activist tag-along beginning when he joined his sister Dana while she was participating in the Clayoquot Sound logging protests back in the 1990’s (Krawczyk was there too). By his own admission, Kagis wasn’t there so much for the issue as much as the rabble rousing and the opportunity to hang with Dana.

One of the first times Kagis came to public attention was during Occupy Vancouver. He participated as one of the ‘medics’, and got a lot of media attention when he was first on the scene during OV’s first drug overdose. During the aftermath many Occupiers were pushing for a drug free environment in the camp- Kagis was one of the more vocal people against this policy. Two days later OV had it’s second overdose- a young girl died after shooting up in her tent.

Kagis exposed the heights of his idiocy during the student fee (Casseroles) protests in the Spring of 2012. Protesters including his partner Sasha Wiley-Shaw of the BC Federation of Teachers (a.k.a. Creepy Bittergrrl) spent an afternoon marching down the streets, blocking traffic and baiting/harassing the police. Kagis walked around with the lid to a pot and spent much of the protest banging it with a wooden spook in-front of the faces of VPD officers. Here’s a video of his greatest moments:

Later during the protest Sasha Wiley-Shaw was arrested after refusing to listen to police orders while protesters participated in a juvenile stunt walking back-and-forth across a crosswalk and harassing motorists. When Wiley-Shaw was released, Kagis wrapped her up in bandages while she paraded herself across the media lying that the police had broken her arm. The story was, however, a total fabrication- no bones were broken, and the lie was called-out on CKNW’s Bill Good show.

Good luck Vancouver-West End…

And, of course, they were represented by David Eby...
