Although you may spend your life killing, You will not exhaust all your foes. But if you quell your own anger, your real enemy will be slain.

I’ve been watching The Newsroom the past few weeks. For someone who has mostly given up on television the past few years, I’ve been generally impressed by it. The storylines are engaging, the characters are not too simplistic (but could be better), and the show has good energy. But, after watching this week’s episode, I’m somewhat dismayed…
The story was about the day it was announced that Osama Bin Ladin was killed. And, typical of American TV, it was filled with patriotic ‘rah rah’- this is to be expected I guess. But, the way they approached Osama’s death literally made my stomach turn- and not in an “I love the USA” kind of a way.
Each time one of the characters in the show was told that Osama was killed they lit-up with the kind of excitement one would expect to see from someone who just heard they won the lottery. Great big smiles, cheers, and happiness that one should never have when they hear that someone was killed. The only way I could describe it is as being 9/11 porn.
Whoever wrote this episode should be deeply ashamed of themselves for so shamelessly promoting the killing of another person. All violence is deplorable- no matter whose side it is for.

If you like shows about the news media try season 5 of The Wire. The Wire is one of the few shows of the past 8 years that has held my interest. Anyway, in addition to the main plot of following the Baltimore drug, political and police business they get into the newspaper as well.
